What Is China Doing In Angola?

Chinese Workers Building Railway Lines In Angola
China is ever growing in its international presence. Its rapid economic growth has led it to requiring more natural resources than ever before. For the first time in many years China is now requiring large volumes of imports in order to sustain its growth. Recently Africa and in Particular Angola has been its latest location in the hunt for natural resources.

Angola has abundant Oil, much more than it can use itself. Therefore, China has deals with the Angolan government to trade a combination of finance, infrastructural improvements and expertise in return for crude oil. According to the World Bank the latest Angolan-China deal is worth $9 billion.

China is helping to repair and reconstruct damaged existing infrastructure while also building additional new infrastructure. 1 billion of the credit has already been spent on various projects, such as:
- Acquisition of construction equipment
- Expansion of the electricity network in Luanda province
- Road repairs
- Construction and refurbishment of schools
- Rehabilitation of hospitals and health centres
- Rehabilitation and modernisation of irrigation areas
- Rehabilitation of infrastructures of energy and water.
- Acquisition of lorries to be given to Angolans who lost their lorries due to the war

Although many criticize Chinese intentions, Angolans and most international analysts recognize Angola are getting a better deal than they would of done from anyone else for the same oil contracts.
